Portrait de Véio, Nossa Senhora da Glória, 7 novembre 2009

Cicero Alves dos Santos (known as Véio) began making models out of beeswax, and then began sculpting wood inspired by accidents of nature: the small fork of a tree creates two legs, the curve of a branch turns into a bird, and so on.

Véio’s works are inspired by the traditions of his native land, the sertão, located in northeastern Brazil. In this region, the unequal distribution of land and its usage for livestock farming has impoverished a large part of the population, a poverty which is exacerbated by drought. It is this respectful and painful relationship with nature that is expressed in the works of Véio and other artists who employ the same technique. Véio’s originality lies in the unique spatiality of his works, sometimes very large, and sometimes minuscule.

Véio was invited by the Fondation Cartier to take part in the exhibitions in Paris, Histoires de voir in 201 and Mémoires vives in 2014, and also in Les Citoyens at the Triennale Milano en 2021.
