The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain presents Raymond Hains: A Work Under Construction. From the Grand Louvre to the 3 Cartier.

In the galerie Valois, reproductions of the artist's works and archival materials shed light on the network of associations that shaped his thought. Visitors discover that the name "Cartier" led Hains in several directions at once: to Jacques Cartier, the navigator from Saint-Malo who explored Canada; to Jacques Cartier, head of Cartier London whose offices welcomed General de Gaulle upon his arrival in London in 1940; and to Henri Cartier-Bresson, the photographer of the "decisive moment".

Raymond Hains's work invites us to wander through time and space, guided by the playful and open-ended logic that runs throughout his oeuvre.

Raymond Hains seemingly predicted the Fondation Cartier's move to its location across from the Louvre, forty years after its inception.

Raymond Hains

Raymond Hains studied at the Rennes School of Fine Arts before moving to Paris. Over 60 years on the art scene, first French then international, he cultivated the image of a jack-of-all-trades, as mischievous as he was elusive. From his beginnings, he was interested in experimental photography and developed a shooting device using fluted glass, which led to abstract films and so-called "hypnagogic" photographs. From 1949, he began working with torn posters collected directly from the street.

    La galerie Valois

The galery Valois is a former commercial gallery. Opened in 1919, this shopping arcade consisted of display windows and merchandise stalls and aimed to attract travelers to the heart of the store. The design of this gallery, with its floral motifs, is a testament to the Art Nouveau style and constitutes a remarkable passage in Parisian urban planning. Today, it serves the new spaces of the Fondation Cartier, with whom the RATP wished to engage in a collaboration in this heritage site.
