Commissioned by the Fondation Cartier, the installation Bucky, from Chemistry to Design, is conceived to accompany the Nomadic Nights, a series of events each week that includes concerts, dance and performers. Inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s fascination with form and technology, Newson has designed a self-supporting geodesic dome, measuring about 6.5 metes in diameter. The dome is constructed from individual triangular chair-like units, each one in a different color (blue, yellow, red, green, pink).
Here, Newson’s own visual language can be found in the soft, round, immediately friendly shapes. Another twenty or so separate chair-like units will be placed randomly around the floor; to be used as seats or as abstract playthings by actors and visitors.
Through this kind of exhibition, the Fondation Cartier intends to develop a unique collaboration between artists coming from different areas such as design, architecture, dance, video, or music. Newson’s exhibition during the Nomadic Nights at the Fondation Cartier is a result of such a collaboration.
