For the first time outside of Nigeria, Ojeikere presents a series sixty-four photos entitled Hair Style at the Fondation Cartier.

“It is fascinating to watch a ‘hair artist’ make all these precise movements, just like an artist making a sculpture. Hairstyles are a form of art.”

Ojeikere photographs them everyday in the street, at work, at parties, in a systematic manner, from behind, sometimes in profile, and, more rarely, frontally.

“A frontal photograph shows nothing. The ones from behind are almost abstract and better reveal the sculptural aspect of hairstyles. Shots from different angles reveal the structures.”

With Hair Style, Ojeikere has embarked upon an infinite series since hairstyles evolve with fashion.

“All of these hairstyles are ephemeral and I want my photographs to be memorable traces of them. I have always wanted to record moments of beauty, moments of knowledge. Art is life. Without art, life would be frozen.”

Unique in its genre, Ojeikere’s work has been motivated by personal decision in accordance with a confirmed artistic approach.
