From Victor Hugo to Nan Goldin, from Lewis Carroll to Bill Viola, by night takes a look at what carries on at night and what keeps it ticking over—in the bustle and in the noise, under the neon lights of the metropolis or in the darkness and silence of the sky and nature.
A history of the night as seen through the eyes of the painters, photographers, video artists and film-makers, by night is an exhibition about the fascination and excitement the night exerts us all—the night: focal point in the quest for identity and aesthetic research.
From one point to the next, the exhibition is organized around a series of oppositions: color and black-and-white, movement and immobility, inside and outside, darkness and light, peace and despair. by night washes back and forth between a night that is at once glamorous and meditative, open to the sky and underground, and where the images oscillate between fiction and reality, carrying us off into the unknown country of night.
