Terraforma EXO and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, present Correspondences Live by Soundwalk Collective & Patti Smith in two exclusive performances at Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber in Milan on 26 and 27 November 2026.
The Correspondences performances will mark the final chapter of Terraforma EXO 2026, an international programme unfolding from July across New York, in collaboration with MoMA PS1, and Palermo, at Villa Tasca. Now in its third edition as the evolution of the Terraforma festival, Terraforma EXO explores sound as a tool for artistic, ecological, and collective inquiry. Correspondences Live is a live immersive extension of the exhibition Correspondences by Soundwalk Collective & Patti Smith presented from November 26, 2026 to March 7, 2027 by Triennale Milano and the Fondation Cartier, in the framework of their cultural partnership, active since 2019.
Correspondences is an evolving body of work born from the long-standing collaboration between Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith. For more than a decade, the project has travelled through remote geographies, fragile ecosystems, and historically charged territories, gathering sonic traces, poetic reflections, and environmental testimonies. Through field recordings, texts, images, and sound compositions, Correspondences explores themes including climate change, the resilience of nature, collective memory, and the relationship between humans and landscape.
Founded by Stephan Crasneanscki and joined by Simone Merli, Soundwalk Collective creates works that intertwine sound, cinema, and visual art through a deeply site-specific practice. Recordings captured in some of the world’s most remote locations are transformed into immersive compositions, which Patti Smith inhabits with her distinctive poetic voice, shaping narratives suspended between reality and imagination. In Correspondences Live, the traditional relationship between image and sound is reversed: sound precedes image, becoming both narrative structure and interpretive space.
Among the project’s most recent chapters, Correspondences Vol. 2, released on 21 March 2025, focuses on the soundscapes of Chernobyl, reflecting on the historical impact of the nuclear disaster and nature’s ability to regenerate beyond human presence. The work continues the collective’s exploration of the boundaries between perception, environment, and memory, inviting audiences to engage with invisible territories and the sonic dimensions of the unknown.
Soundwalk Collective
Soundwalk Collective is composed of artist Stephan Crasneanscki (Odessa, 1969) and producer Simone Merli (Milan, 1978). The collective combines sound, film, and mixed media in site- and context-specific works, developing a multidisciplinary practice spanning contemporary art, experimental music, and cinema. Over the years, they have collaborated with Patti Smith, Jean-Luc Godard, Nan Goldin, Sasha Waltz, and Charlotte Gainsbourg, among others. At the core of their practice is the exploration of sound as a means to interpret the complexity of human experience and our relationship with the environment.

Patti Smith is a writer, artist, and performer. Author of the memoir Just Kids, winner of the 2010 National Book Award, she has also published M Train, Woolgathering, Book of Days, and Bread of Angels (2025). Her many honours include the Polar Music Prize, the PEN Literary Service Award, the Légion d’honneur, and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal (2024).
