For more than ten years, video artists, producers, and editors, Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine have been conducting research that stands out by its experimentation with new narrative and cinematographic forms in relation to contemporary architecture and the urban world.
The Fondation Cartier coproduced Bêka & Lemoine’s latest film on Bijoy Jain. By immersing viewers into the bustling daily life of Mumbai, the film offers a portrait of the Indian architect by means of a promenade incorporating some of Bijoy Jain’s favorite sites: buildings that have influenced his practice and the people and places that have contributed to shaping his unique identity and sensibility.
This film, screened in partnership with the CNC in honor of the opening of the exhibition Breath of an Architect by Bijoy Jain / Studio Mumbai, can be viewed by visitors to the Fondation Cartier from December 13 onwards.
“The films that have changed the way of looking at architecture.”

Biographies
Bêka & Lemoine have stood out on the international architectural scene for the last fifteen years through a cinematographic work known for its innovative nature and its tender and biting humour, which has disrupted the usual representation of contemporary architecture by putting people and uses at the forefront. Theirs films often questions how rooted architecture practice is and how much the built and cultural environment feeds and shapes our imagination.
Fondation Cartier co-produces Bêka & Lemoine’s last movie on Bijoy Jain. Through an immersion within Mumbai’s busy daily life, it unfolds a portrait of Bijoy Jain through a free wander between some sites he personally affectionates, buildings that have influenced him, and people and places which have contributed to shape Bijoy Jain’s unique identity and sensibility.
Bijoy Jain, born in 1965 in Mumbai, studied at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. He worked in Los Angeles and London before returning to India in 1995 and founding Studio Mumbai. The studio operates as an interdisciplinary group of architects, engineers, master builders, artisans, technicians and artists across continents. As a collective, they are involved in the research and development of projects, using process and time as an integral part of its expression; water air and light being the basis of all materiality in the synthesis of the work... Humankind in nature – nature in Humankind.
Bijoy Jain teaches at the Accademia di architettura, Università della Svizzera Italiana in Mendrisio, Switzerland. He also taught as a visiting professor at Yale University in the United States and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. In 2015, he received an honorary doctorate from Hasselt University, Belgium, for his contribution to the architectural profession. In 2017, he received the RIBA International Fellowship in London.
