Jonathan Vinel studied film editing at FEMIS, the Fondation Européenne Pour les Métiers de l'Image et du Son in Paris.
Since 2014, he has been mainly working with Caroline Poggi. The duo had started out making films solo before they began a collaboration on the 2014 film Tant qu'il Nous Reste des Fusils à Pompe (“As Long As Shotguns Remain”), which won a Golden Bear for Best Short at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. Their first feature film, Jessica Forever (2018), was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, followed by a screening at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2019. Their film Eat the Night (2024) was presented at the DIrector's Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival that same year.
The collaboration between the Fondation Cartier and Poggi and Vinel began in 2019 with the exhibition Jeunes Artistes en Europe, which presented the film Martin Pleure (2017). In 2021, the foundation commissioned the duo to create an original film, shot on location at the worksite of their future venue near the Louvre–Palais Royal in Paris. The world premiere of this film, Best Secret Place, was presented at the 76th annual Locarno Film Festival in 2023. The duo also wrote a book, Infinite Memory (2024), which was co-edited by the Fondation Cartier and Lenz.
