nora chipaumire

Anti-genre artist originally from Mutare, Zimbabwe, Nora Chipaumire creates work that draws from Zimbabwean culture and Shona legends, incorporating influences from dub music and punk aesthetics. For over ten years, she has been developing Nhaka ('heritage, legacy' in Shona), a technique, physical manifesto, and decolonial animist practice rooted in Shona culture, which invites us to experience other ways of inhabiting the body and to rethink the connections uniting humans with the natural and spiritual worlds. 

Created at Tate Modern in London in June 2026 as a performed installation, Gadzi refers to Gadziguru, a major ancestral female figure in Shona culture, associated with the earth, ancestors, and creation. Gadzi reinvents itself at the Fondation Cartier by unfolding within the works of Ibrahim Mahama.

Surrounded by long-standing collaborators, both dancers and musicians, nora chipaumire transforms the space into an environment to be physically experienced, through sounds, music, dance, movement, and audience circulation.
