About the publication

In 1989, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain set itself a challenge: to bring together that which made and unmade the 1980s in France, before the decade was out. To do so, it joined forces with Beaux-Arts magazine to publish a special issue devoted to this event, proposing a panorama of French creation in the fields of architecture, design, painting, sculpture, photography, and video, with works by 70 creators. 17 personalities complete the panorama by sharing their vision of the daily environment at the time. Lastly, numerous photographs and texts provide a chance to look back at the events and people who marked the decade: from the humorist Coluche to AIDS, the Bébête Show to the abolition of the death penalty, and from François Mitterrand to Yannick Noah.
