Alex Cerveny studied several art mediums independently, including drawing, painting, metal engraving, and lithography and printing techniques.
In the early 1980s, he enrolled in the Piolin Circus Arts Academy and the Picadeiro Circus School to study to be a contortionist, an experience that influenced his oeuvre. Apart from his career in the visual arts, Cerveny also worked as an illustrator. He has shown his pieces in several exhibitions, such as Panorama da Arte Atual Brasileira (Panorama of Current Brazilian Art) at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art (1987 and 1990), the 21st Art Biennale in São Paulo (1991), the 23rd Biennale in Sydney (2022) and the 15th Biennale in Gwangju (2024). In 2023, his solo exhibition, Mirabilia at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, contained over 100 works created over his forty-year career.
Cerveny's oeuvre was featured at the Fondation Cartier for the first time in 2019, in the exhibition Nous les Arbres in Paris, followed by the exhibition Trees at the Power Station of Art in Shanghai. His work was also shown at the Milano Triennale, in the exhibitions Mondo Reale (2022) and Siamo Foresta (2023), as part of the cultural partnership between the Fondation Cartier with this Italian institution. Additionally, in Siamo Foresta, the artist was invited to participate in the scenography in situ.
