About the night class

As part of the exhibition The Valley, the Fondation Cartier invites Fabrice Hyber, artist-sower whose work is honored through this exhibition, and exhibition curator and art critic Hans Ulrich Obrist to participate in the Voices of the Valley evening class series. Within the exhibition spaces, they will discuss the hypotheses proposed by Fabrice Hyber in his paintings before a live audience.

On this evening, Friday, January 6, on the occasion of the Epiphany, they will explore the beginning of things and their manifestation. Based on the works Error and Hyberhéros, the two longstanding friends ask themselves the question: “What is an epiphany?” and explore topics like luminous revelations, the seed as potential until the appearance of the hero, the king. The conversation may even turn into a performance!

This live discussion will be broadcast simultaneously on the websites of the Fondation Cartier and *Duuu Radio, and in the form of podcasts via the main platforms.

    Fabrice Hyber

Born in the Vendée in 1961, Fabrice Hyber studied math and physics before entering the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes. Since the start of his career in the 1980s, to his becoming the youngest ever recipient of the Golden Lion at the 1997 Venice Art Biennale, the artist has garnered increasing attention on the international scene. His work has been shown at numerous prestigious institutional venues in France and elsewhere, and he has participated in important international arts events. Invariably starting from the practice of drawing and painting, he explores all modes of expression. His way of working across various formats is enriched each time by a dialogue with multiple disciplines (from physics to the neurosciences, from astronomy to herbal medicine, from micro to macro, etc.), thereby allowing the spectator/actor to approach other universes and possibilities of action. Transmission is at the heart of the work of this artist for whom “art is a way of learning about the world by making it.” Fabrice Hyber was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 2018, and in 2021, was appointed ambassador of the French National Forestry Board’s “Agir pour la forêt” program, in recognition for his work and commitment to forests.
