About the publication

Vivre en couleur was an exhibition that presented a selection of young French designers brought together to design the furniture for the Petit Café of the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Jouy-en-Jousas in 1985. Auchet, Cordier, Garouste & Bonetti, Mourgue, Nemo, Perkal, Sala, Starck, and Totem all joined in the adventure. The exhibition unveiled the new face of French design in 1985, presenting a particularly extensive range of everyday objects and a multiplicity of installations—from the relatively traditional furniture stand to a totalizing artist’s environment.
For the Vivre en couleur catalog, the young designers looked back on the hopes and frustrations experienced along the way in interviews with writers such as Hubert Besacier, Gérard-Georges Lemaire, and François Baudot.
