About the publication
Born in 1964 in Munich, Thomas Demand holds a highly singular place in German photography. He started out as a sculptor working on paper, learning photography to record his short-lived creations. The camera then became a central place to his creative process. He painstakingly creates paper models evoking 20th century architecture and places them in front of its lens.
Realized for the artist’s exhibition at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in 2000, this book compiles his creations between 1994 and 2000. The models patiently created in his workshop and then captured on film form an original reflection on the status of images and simulacra.
