About the publication

Born in Denmark in 1912, Robert Jacobsen was a significant figure in post-war European sculpture whose work was split between abstract formalism and expressive figuration. In 1988, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain hosted an exhibition featuring Jacobsen and Jean Clareboudt. This exhibition was the occasion for the Fondation Cartier to publish an artist’s book reproducing a dozen unpublished drawings by Robert Jacobsen alongside 13 portraits of the artist, taken by photographer Alain Bizos in 1987 and presenting him at home in his various studios in Tagelund, Denmark. A “close-up” of the great Danish sculptor, this book is a chance to rediscover, through his drawings, the alphabet of colors he used on metal.
