| From the very first day it opened, one of the purposes of the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain was to follow a policy of commissioning monumental works for the grounds at Jouy-en-Josas. After Arman’s Long Term Parking, Pagès’s Totem, Spoerri’s Déjeuner sur l’herbe, César’s Hommage à Eiffel, and Jean-Pierre Raynaud’s pot in a glasshouse, in 1986 it proved hard to choose the artists who would join them. The exhibition Sculptures, première approche pour un parc, held in 1986, stemmed from this question and presented the public with an initial selection of artists who might one day create a piece for the Fondation. Proposing a Prévert-style inventorial visit, the catalog published for the event looks back over the works selected while providing additional theoretical and biographical input. |
