About the publication

Iron played a central part in César’s work, cropping up regularly along his path—originally with his soldered iron pieces, then in the 1960s with Compressions, and lastly through Hommage à Eiffel, completed in 1989 in the grounds of the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Jouy-en-Josas.
The exhibition Les Fers de César honored the artist’s works from 1955 to 1963, presenting an impressive aesthetic homogeneity and a fascinating demonstration of a fundamentally original and unfettered imagination.
The catalog published for what was the inaugural exhibition of the Fondation Cartier in 1984 features 47 reproductions plus a series of texts and interviews offering different views on César’s work.
