About the publication

Born in Paris on March 10, 1946, Gérard Garouste became one of the most important and internationally famed French artists of the 1980s, with work that boldly revisits the great classic themes of mythology while paying due respect to tradition. Limited to 500 copies, 50 of which are signed, this artist’s book brings together gouaches and India ink works specially realized for the exhibition Les Indiennes at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in 1988. Gouache and inks have a close link with writing and text, as though no hierarchy existed between drawing, painting, and sculpture in Gérard Garouste’s work, no break between the written space and the pictorial space. If not a book of prayers, this is at the very least an object of meditation.
