Exhibition overview

The Fondation Cartier presents Gérard Garouste’s Les Indiennes. These large painted canvases were created in 1988 and designed mainly according to the very unique spaces of the Fondation Cartier Gallery.

Haunted by his reading of Dante’s Divine Comedy, Gérard Garouste painted his first “Indiennes” piece in 1987. Positioned following a dynamic pattern and combined with the masses of architecture, “Les Indiennes” invites the viewer on a meditative journey, transforming the space into illustrated scenes that resonate with the texts by which they were inspired.

The Fondation Cartier’s exhibit also fulfills the artist’s wish to host an exhibit in an architectured space closed in on itself, suitable for staging and for intimacy with the contemplated image, like the ambulatory of a cathedral would be.
