In 1997, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presented Coïncidence, an exhibition where objects, images, and works were presented for judgment, risked refusal and sometimes even violence, but also provided a chance to meet and share. Some of the works generated utopia and impossibility, borrowing from scientific experiments ; others mimicked research in order to come up with new clues ; others still questioned the process by which images appear...
The Coïncidences exhibition catalog shows artists’ views of the world and features works that move in a free space where anyone can create their own fiction, giving rise to fresh speculations. Through the diversity of forms, gestures and undertakings they reveal, these works establish, inaugurate, and happen.
