Exhibition overview

Since 1980, Richard Baquié has been producing a story from which everything begins. His works are present in the Fondation Cartier’s collection, and given these various collaborations, it was only natural to confirm the Fondation’s commitment with a deeper look into his work.

For Richard Baquié, sculpture is attentiveness. It produces an awareness from which his approach ensues. The elements he collects – old car doors, worn sheets of metal, faltering engines – are not chosen for their easy literary effect, but rather to add a touch of reality to the work, to its influence, to its aura. Through the personal history and thus the memory that these materials convey, they provide the piece with a particular density that fills the form with an alleged story.
