Shinzo et Roso Fukuhara Photographies 1913-1941

Shinzo and Roso Fukuhara’s first exhibition outside Japan was organized by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in 1994. The work of these two brothers, known as the pioneers of “artistic photography,” was mainly composed during the animated time of renewal in the interwar years and played a large part in bringing recognition to Japanese contemporary photography. While Shinzo Fukuhara laid down the foundations for a new sensitivity during the golden age of artistic photography in Japan (1910–20), Roso Fukuhara’s style was strongly influenced by the New Photography of the post 1930s.
The catalog published for the exhibition brings together a selection of photographs taken between 1913 and 1941, and offers a chance to discover the brothers’ criss-crossing gazes, which form a kind of photographic haiku.
