About the publication
With Les Dessins du troisième jour, which he started in 1991 and presented at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in 1993, Marc Couturier inaugurated a new way of drawing. Traced in black lead with an automatic script, these drawings reveal incredible natural sites—trees, paths, banks, foliage—hidden under a densely hypnotic network of dark scratches. Through these drawings steeped in spirituality, Marc Couturier constantly alludes to an exchange between nature and the divine.
The book published to accompany the exhibition presents thirty or so mind-reeling drawings that inspire contemplation and meditation. The catalog provides a way to discover and understand Marc Couturier’s intensely symbolic and spiritual approach.
