“I’d like visitors to this exhibition to feel this idea of speed in front of static objects. The exhibition is a journey. Vertigo exercises, sensorial simulation, light and wind effects: everything moves, while staying motionless,” summed up Kristian Gavoille, the exhibition designer of La Vitesse, presented at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in 1991. Speed is the big phenomenon of the 20th century, a “world” where images and sensations get jumbled together at a breakneck rate, where space and time are thrown into a whirl. Exciting or cruel, intoxicating or destructive, speed determines our lives and behavior today.
The book published by the Fondation Cartier and Éditions Flammarion explores the primitive greatness of speed without exalting it, in a bid to simply describe this essential transformative factor. The numerous authors featured in the book all participated with talent and awareness to help achieve this understanding.
