Hiroshi Sugimoto Conceptual Forms

Born in Tokyo in 1948, Hiroshi Sugimoto left Japan in 1970 to study art in Los Angeles. Following on from the tradition of minimalist, conceptualist trends, he developed his own original photographic technique marked by a rigorous, serial approach.
Thirty years after the Dioramas series, Sugimoto presented the Conceptual Forms series at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in 2004, with which he turned to other scientific representations by devoting himself to photographs of stereometric plaster models and 19th century mechanical parts. Hiroshi Sugimoto’s exhibition Étant donné : Le Grand Verre (named in homage to Marcel Duchamp) and the accompanying catalog explore the ties between photography, science, and art history.
