About the publication

In 2006, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain invited Agnès Varda to present the exhibition L’Île et Elle, comprising installations and videos inspired by the French island of Noirmoutier that she knows so well.
The book published on this occasion is a notebook, or catalog in the making, that portrays the people and places on the island that have inspired Agnès Varda. More than a journey on this island, it takes us into the roving spirit of this artist who has applied her filmmaking to videos and installations. Texts, photographs, installation models, and collected images are interwoven with drawings by her friend Christophe Vallaux, who sketched her in the throes of work.
