About the publication
Born in San Francisco in 1967, Matthew Barney is an internationally recognized figure in contemporary art. In 1995, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presented his first personal exhibition in Europe. The photographs, drawings, and sculptures on show were directly inspired by what was then his latest video, Cremaster 4, directed in 1994 and co-produced by the Fondation Cartier. Matthew Barney takes advantage of the intimist, suggestive nature of video to direct himself and create scenarios that skillfully mix the dramatic tension of the American horror flick with the technological and iconographic vocabulary of TV sports broadcasts.
The book was specially realized for the exhibition by Matthew Barney himself and offers a discovery—or rediscovery—of the strange and complex mythology he invented.
