The exhibition in detail

While making studio photographs, Malick Sidibé does many reportage pieces on young people’s leisure pursuits in the new state of Mali: parties, weddings, evenings where people dance and show off their clothes, bars, clubs where young people go to listen to pop music, rock’n’roll and soul, outings on the banks of the River Niger, and so on.

"The most authentic thing is the face. So for me photography is the art that can best perpetuate its image. Man tried to imitate God through drawing, then photography came along and I think we’ve never invented anything better for perpetuating images. I believe in the power of the image".
