Exhibition overview
The Fondation Cartier presents an exhibit on Jeff Wall made up of seven works from different periods, most of them never displayed in France. This presentation was created following a major request the Fondation Cartier made to the artist in 1991, and whose result, “A Sudden Gust of Wind After Hokusai,” is possibly one of Jeff Wall’s most daring creations. In the exhibit, his beginnings are presented in the form of still photography showing the technical originality of the artist’s approach.
The principle of the exhibit fulfills the artist’s desire to offer a reflection on the motivations of his work, illustrated by his very own selection of his works.
This selection expresses two main themes: on the one hand, the artist’s relationship with the history of art and film and, on the other hand, the allure of the image’s implicit content, as well as its ability to crystallize social, human, and economic relationships, to which the artist has always paid careful attention in his work.
