Exhibition overview

Fifty years ago, James Lee Byars puts together his first exhibition, in connection with his studies in art and philosophy. Taking care to empty his parent’s living room of objects, furniture, windows, doors, Byars exhibited a spherical stone there for the day. On a trip to Paris in 1995, moved by the transparency and clarity of the Fondation Cartier, James Lee Byars designed two monumental new rooms for the site, two major works dedicated to Roland Barthes. These works were specially created for the exhibition and produced by the Fondation Cartier.
