Exhibition overview

The work of Alain Séchas does not belong to any system. Original and troubling, falsely tender and naive and loaded with biting humour, it defies all interpretative strategies. What is imediately striking is the way he uses varied materials which he associates with a determined search for clearly identifiable forms.

The exhibition in detail

Immediate legibility is one of the keys to understanding Séchas’ work. Since 1984, Alain Séchas has been staging objects, drawings, paintings and animated films. The materials he uses can be fragile, light, incredibly thin (Plexiglas) or emphatically dense (polyester).
The works by Séchas brought together at the Fondation Cartier are highly representative of this diversity: cats, skeletons, children, teachers, etc. His paintings, sculptures and videos are all based on a love for simple line drawing.
