About the publication

Rejecting established artistic practices, which he feels alienate and even mutilate both artists and viewers, since the late 1960s, Jochen Gerz has practiced offbeat, divergent art, in which he sets about dismantling visual habits and cultural tools, showing their inability to convey reality. This multidisciplinary artist uses various mediums—temporary installations, performances, writing, language, drawing, photography and video tape—to purvey criticism and doubt about art as the representation of reality. The exhibition catalog published for Une exposition / An Exhibition, presented by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in 1989, revisits the artist’s nonconformist work in pictures.
