About the publication

In 2000, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presented France’s first major retrospective of the American photographer Herb Ritts. After working for the biggest fashion magazines in the 1980s, Herb Ritts found a personal photographic identity that stood apart from his professional activity. His images unsettle: the ambiguities of sexual identities and taboos are portrayed with disconcerting simplicity; a cheeky, bittersweet lightheartedness that throws the viewer off guard and makes the photographer’s presence forgotten.
Published for the Herb Ritts exhibition presented at the Fondation Cartier in 1999, this book portrays his work through 94 black-and-white portraits.
