About the exhibition
Following a successful debut in Paris at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, the exhibition Olga de Amaral will be presented at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) May 1 – October 12, 2025.
As a key figure of the Colombian art scene and of Fiber Art, Olga de Amaral has been expanding the boundaries of the textile medium, continually experimenting with different materials (linen, cotton, horsehair, gesso, goldleaf, palladium) and techniques: she weaves, knots, braids, and interweaves threads to create monumental three-dimensional pieces. Her unclassifiable work draws equally from the Modernist principles that she discovered at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in the United States, and the vernacular traditions of her country, as well as pre-Columbian art. The exhibition at ICA Miami will bring together almost 60 works made between the 1960s and today, many of which have never been shown in the United States, completed by new specific loans. Beyond the vibrant goldleaf pieces for which the artist is renowned, the exhibition reveals her earliest explorations and experimentations with textiles, as well as her monumental works.
Despite her international renown, Amaral's work had rarely been shown in Europe before the monographic presentation at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, on view until March 2025. The exhibition in Miami will continue to offer a fresh and exhaustive perspective on her career and unveils the full complexity of her artistic practice. Without adopting a strictly chronological order, the exhibit shines a light on the different periods that have characterized her artistic career: from her formal explorations (use of the grid, colors) to her experimentations (with materials and scale), as well as the influences that have nurtured her work (constructivist art, Latin-American handcrafts, the pre- Columbian era).
This presentation will continue the collaboration with French-Lebanese architect Lina Ghotmeh, the founder of the international agency Lina Ghotmeh - Architecture. Invited by the Fondation Cartier to design the exhibition spaces, she immersed herself in Amaral's sources of inspiration to highlight its relationship with nature, matter, and light.
