With Night shift, an in-situ creation for the Nomadic Nights, Kayije Kagame—who recently collaborated in the theater with TG Stan and in an upcoming movie with Alice Diop—invites the public to stroll around the spaces of a museum at night.

Kayije Kagame likes to challenge the notion of representation. Discovered by director Bob Wilson, she has since embarked on numerous collaborations in contemporary art, theater and cinema. Working with artists from all different backgrounds, she also creates her own projects—the remarkable diptych Sans Grace/Avec Grace co-written with actress Grace Seri—and explores, by means of immersive visual and sound devices, the notion of non-performance.

Invited by the Nomadic Nights, Kayije Kagame and her artistic collaborators have created an unbridled performance in the gallery spaces of the Fondation Cartier, inspired by the memory of her godfather, Cuban artist Victor Hugo de la Torre, who was a painter, dancer and museum attendant.

What happens in a museum at night, when the artworks are on their own, freed at last from the incessant stares of visitors?

Kayije Kagame lives and works in Geneva. The author of performances, sound pieces, films and installations, her practice extends beyond borders and across various art forms. She is currently preparing for her next stage and cinematographic project entitled Garde-robe, the premiere of which is scheduled for late August at La Bâtie-Festival in Geneva, to be followed by a tour. Kayije Kagame also plays the leading role in Saint-Omer, a fictional film directed by Alice Diop with a release date scheduled for 2022.
