Introduction aux Mystères, written and conceived by the Franco-Russian mathematician Misha Gromov, grew out of Misha Gromov’s Library of Mysteries, one of the iconic works of the exhibition Mathematics, A Beautiful Elsewhere held at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in 2011. This work was the brainchild of a unique collaboration between Misha Gromov and filmmaker/artist David Lynch to offer the general public a library of quotations from over 30 books by illustrious thinkers such as Archimedes, Descartes, Galileo, Isaac Newton, and Charles Darwin.
In this book, Misha Gromov takes this subjective anthology and explores it in greater depth. He establishes thematic connections between the different works, incorporates additional quotes from the thinkers as well as new observations of his own. Through this book, Misha Gromov, one of the most original and visionary thinkers of our time, invites readers to discover these seminal “opinions” that have influenced the history of humankind.
