About the publication

In 2011, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presented Mathematics, A Beautiful Elsewhere with one purpose in mind: to let mathematics and mathematicians speak out by giving them the opportunity to brainstorm with major artists from the world of contemporary art.
The catalog published on this occasion was conceived as a discussion forum for the mathematicians and artists, an opportunity for them to exchange ideas and share their thoughts on the most important questions relating to mathematics. A combination of written texts, questionnaires, and portraits, the catalog also illustrates the diversity of mathematical thought—as expressed by the scientists as well as the artists—and emphasizes the importance of creativity in this field. A large part of the book is also devoted to the visual interpretations of mathematics as conveyed through the works of the artists participating in the exhibition. The book also includes an exclusive CD of the exhibition soundtrack gathering the contributions of David Lynch and Patti Smith.
Challenging yet accessible, the catalog Mathematics, A Beautiful Elsewhere offers readers an atypical journey into the world of mathematics and unveils all of its poetic beauty.
