About the publication

Born in 1936 in the village of Soloba in Mali, Malick Sidibé was both a witness to and a player in the transformations experienced by African youth at the time, split between tradition and the emergence of fashion, music, and a lifestyle inspired by the modern Western world. He made this change the main subject matter of his work. In 1995, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain organized an exhibition assembling fifty or more of Sidibé’s photographs, taken in the 1960s and 1970s.
The exhibition catalog features a selection of the photographs exhibited and an interview with the artist by André Magnin.
