About the publication

In 1988, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain invited 18 designers to work on the same material, M.D.F (Medium Density Fiberboard). Developed by American researchers in the 1960s, M.D.F belongs to the most accomplished generation of artificial woods. Deciding to use this material is more than a modernist choice, it is a technical and aesthetic response to the quest for form and meaning that everyday objects can have. Using furniture items as a creative medium, the exhibition catalog presents the result of the designers’ research with M.D.F.
