About the publication

The story of Jean-Pierre Raynaud and “the pot” began in 1962 with a spectacular gesture: the artist filled a flowerpot with cement, painted it, and exhibited it. Twenty-five years down the line, the same pot was still part of the artist’s work. In 1985, the exhibition Histoire du pot was spawned by the desire to explain Jean-Pierre Raynaud’s work following the installation of one of his sculptures in the garden of the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Jouy-en-Josas. This monumental work made up of a white glasshouse containing a huge gilt pot announced his return to other creations with this theme. Penned by Maïten Bouisset and Guy Tossato, the Archétypes catalog tells this incredible “Story of the pot.”
